ABOUT THE VINEYARD

“Mixed blacks” old vine vineyards are living pieces of California wine history—typically planted over a century ago and made up of a wild mix of grape varieties growing side by side. In Sonoma County, these gnarly old vines might include Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignan, Mourvèdre, and other heritage grapes, all co-planted in the same field and harvested together. The vineyards are dry-farmed, head-trained, and often planted in rocky, hillside soils that yield tiny crops bursting with flavor.
